Hand Independence Exercises for Pianists

Piano is uniquely demanding when it comes to hand independence, oftentimes requiring the left and right hand to play two different, syncopated rhythms at once. This course uses nine custom exercises with fun, funky play-along tracks to break down the steps for practicing independence and liberating your hands. Every exercise is inspired by common piano patterns to ensure that you're learning practical skills that can be applied to the songs you're learning, arranging and/or writing. Every exercise begins with one note in each hand and is slowly developed into a complete loop, so you'll have a framework for learning and practicing other complex rhythms that you come across in the future.

The exercises are as follows:

  1. Three Two Switch (passing triplets back and forth between the hands)
  2. Not to Be Confused (a variation on exercise #1 using even rhythms)
  3. Who Needs One? (dropping beat one without losing the beat)
  4. Double Clave (a regular clave in the left and a double time clave in the right)
  5. Syncopatience (pop clave in the left hand, right hand fills in the gaps)
  6. Eagerly Anticipating (anticipating beat one without dropping the groove)
  7. Naughty Ostinato (relaxed left hand ostinato with right hand syncopations)
  8. On & Off (alternating between a downbeat and an anticipation)
  9. Who's the Bossa? (a classic, familiar rhythm broken down)

Each exercise comes with one (or more) play-along tracks as well as a visual representation of the rhythmic grid. They're super catchy and fun, and they can work with ANY chords, so the possibilities are endless.

If you struggle to use your hands independently of one another on the piano, then this course is for you! If you have any questions, feel free to reach out at www.yesbergerplease.com
